Project DescriptionWe are developing a high resolution historical database of gage/radar precipitation for the state of Florida and southern Georgia.  Project participants are:  The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP); Prof. Henry Fuelberg (Florida State University Department of Meteorology); the NWFO Tallahassee, the Southeast River Forecast Center (SERFC),  the NWS Hydrology Laboratory; and the U.S. Geological Survey - FL.    Background

Project Purposes: To support surface and ground water modeling efforts of the FDEP.  To afford research and collaborative opportunities to participants.  To enhance NWS operational use of gage/radar data in support of hydro-meteorological analysis and forecasting.

Project Methodology: New "RFC-wide" software from the NWS Hydrology Laboratory will be used to conduct post-analysis of WSR-88D precipitation.  All available precipitation gage data will be quality controlled.   Radar climatologies will be used to resolve data disparities bewteen radar sites.  Go to Radar Climatologies.

Project Benefits: The process of creating this database will support surface and ground water modeling by the FDEP. In addition, the database will enhance National Weather Service implementation of new hydrologic precipitation analysis software (RFC-wide), and provide opportunities for continued collaboration among project participants and provide research opportunities in the area of gage/radar precipitation analysis and hydrogeology.

How You Can Participate: Become a vital partner in this effort by reviewing the radar climatology in your area.  Your analysis and comments on the radar precipitation quality and systematic biases will directly support this project, and enhance the quality of hydrometeorological support you receive from the National Weather Service.  Though we are primarily surveying Science and Operations Officers at each NWFO site, all interested parties are invited to comment.  Participants should:

            1.  Review the complete Background on this project.   "Background"

            2.  Review radars of interest.  "Radar Climatology Spreadsheet".

            3.  Please Email comments to Dr. Fuelberg.  fuelberg@met.fsu.edu

Areas of interest for comments could include:

                 - Sources of blockages
                 - Sources of  radiation from transmitters
                 - Areas of naturally low accumulations that are not the result of beam blockage.
                 - Comparisons of the radar climatology with your expected seasonal precipitation climatology.
                 - Meteorological explanations for patterns unique to your area.
